You might think that animal neglect and abuse are the same thing, but they’re actually different. While they have some similarities, neglect is more about not giving an animal what it needs to stay healthy, while abuse is about actively hurting the animal. Another issue that’s related is animal hoarding, where people keep way more animals than they can take care of. In the US, around 250,000 dogs are victims of animal hoarding, and millions of animals are neglected every year.
Another term that is very common when talking about animal neglect, is the Noah Syndrome. The Noah Syndrome is a serious mental illness that causes you to hoard a large number of animals without being able to care for them properly. It's like animal hoarding, where they just keep getting more pets even if it gets out of control. People with this syndrome will sometimes have other mental health issues, like anxiety.
There are a bunch of ways animals can be neglected, like:
Food and Water Neglect: When animals don’t get clean water or enough food, they can get really sick or even die from malnutrition or dehydration.
Shelter Neglect: Animals left without proper shelter can suffer from extreme weather conditions like cold or heat, which can lead to hypothermia or heatstroke.
Sanitary Neglect: If the place where animals live isn’t kept clean, it can lead to waste buildup and spread diseases.
Medical Neglect: This is when animals don’t get the medical care they need, like vaccinations, treatment for injuries or illnesses, and other preventive care.
The punishments for neglect can be fines, community service, or even jail time, depending on how bad the neglect is and what the local laws say. In conclusion, even though animal neglect and abuse are different, both are big problems that need attention.
