Every year in the US, around 2.7 million animals are put down in shelters because they’re too crowded (The Zebra). That’s a huge number. In this essay, I’ll explain why so many animals end up being euthanized. The main reasons are overpopulation, lack of resources, age and adaptability, quality of life, and not enough foster homes.

First off, let’s talk about overpopulation. Like I mentioned in my other essay, “The Fight to End Stray Dog Suffering,” this is a huge issue. There are millions of stray dogs all over the world, and shelters just can’t handle them all. Because there are too many animals, shelters often have to put down animals to make space for more urgent cases, like pregnant dogs or litters of puppies.

Another big problem is the lack of resources. Most shelters are run by the government and don’t get enough money or resources to properly care for all the animals. For example, my local shelter has 210 dogs and 260 cats. That’s way too many animals for them to take care of, so they end up having to euthanize some of them.

Age and adaptability are also major issues. Most people who want to adopt a dog only want a puppy. Senior dogs get put down more often because they’re not adopted as quickly. If these older dogs don’t get adopted within a certain time, shelters have no choice but to euthanize them.

Quality of life is another reason for euthanasia that makes some sense. Some dogs are really sick or injured and have almost no chance of recovering. Even if they do survive, their quality of life might be so poor that it’s not worth it. For example, some dogs might be paralyzed and need expensive surgery that won’t really improve their lives.

Finally, not having enough foster homes is a huge problem. If there were more people willing to foster animals, shelters wouldn’t have to euthanize as many. Being a foster means taking care of an animal temporarily, which can save its life. Foster parents are super important because they help reduce the number of animals that have to be put down.

In conclusion, the best way to help reduce euthanasia rates and stop killing shelters is by fostering animals. I hate to even imagine that if my family hadn’t adopted our dog, she would have been forced to be put down.If you’re interested, check out your local shelter’s website to learn how to become a foster parent and make a difference.
